SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Pediatrics

As an integrative pediatrician working with a socioeconomically, culturally and ethnically diverse clientele in St Louis MO I started to recognize the burden of ACES on the health of my patients and their families and was so fortunate to connect with Integrate! A Trauma Informed Network. Dr. Nadine Burke Harris says, toxic stress is the kind of stress that can come in response to living for months or years with childhood trauma that gets biologically embedded in our bodies (ACES Adverse Childhood Events/Experiences. And as Donna Jackson Nakazawa says recognizing that chronic childhood stress can play a role along with genetics and other factors—in developing adult illnesses and relationship challenges, can be enormously freeing. We can become neuro-biologically resilient. We can turn bad epigenetics into good epigenetics and rescue ourselves.

While there are benefits to networking within our own professional circles but in order to see families living with complex trauma develop a sense of purpose and success, this network provided that invaluable space for social workers, yoga teachers, mental health professionals, public educators, artists to come together to share their specific approaches to trauma informed care, freely share effective practices for serving trauma culture in a multidisciplinary way. I have learned so much from all the trauma informed professionals in this group and I continue to draw on their expertise as a referral source and a support system for my patients and their families.
